At least 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
