Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
