The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese spun out over the track edges before spinning across the run-off area, and was blessed to avoid just a minor contact of the barrier. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the final moments of the session, spinning around through the high-speed corner leading to the final bend on to the pit straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th, just behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's car third fastest, over half a second slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
