Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
